Although July 4th is recognized as America’s birthday, the idea of having a day to commemorate the flag was initiated in a school in Wisconsin where pupils celebrated and were encouraged to recognize this day as “Flag Birthday”.
After much publicity and popularity surrounding this idea, in 1894 the governor of New York decreed that on this day the flag would be displayed on all public buildings. Finally, after many years of celebrating this day, in 1949 President Truman signed an act of Congress officially making June 14th of each year, National Flag Day.
Nowadays, National Flag Day is celebrated with parades, the display of flags on all government buildings and all U.S. citizens are encouraged to proudly fly the American flag.
